The 2017 Mockingbird Valley Sports Complex (MVSC) Annual Adult and High School Indoor Soccer Tournament, presented by Baptist Medical Group, was another huge success for MVSC! The annual event hosted January 7-8, 2017 marked the 33 rd Annual Indoor Soccer Tournament at MVSC, which is the longest running indoor soccer tournament in the nation! MVSC worked very hard to improve the tournament from previous years to enhance the competition, atmosphere, fun and overall enjoyment for all participants and fans that had the privilege of watching some of the highest quality soccer that Louisville has to offer. As is the case each year, this tournament featured teams from around the Midwest Region.
The part of the tournament that is the most heralded is the Men’s Open Division, which featured teams from all over the Midwest Region, and was again one of the most exciting divisions of this event’s 33 year history. The Men’s Open Division consisted of three groups. During group play, the competition was stiff, only the group winners and one wildcard advanced to the semi-finals. The group winners were all teams from the area that currently play in our Monday night Premier League Jive Turkey, Outlaws, LSA while Swerve out of Cincinnati took the wildcard. In possibly the “game of the tournament”, Jive Turkey went into sudden-death overtime with the Outlaws before Kyle Schickel’s one timer advanced Jive into the finals. In the other semi-final, LSA started strong but was not able to keep the ball out of the net and Serve moved on to the finals. The finals consisted of a rematch of a group play game that Jive won 5-4 over Swerve. However, Swerve was ready for this rematch and came out on top 4-1 in an outstanding game.
The 2017 Men’s Over 30 Division was well represented with 7 teams, and the level of competition was also impressive. With the four advancing teams ready, BMOC would match up well in a rematch of last year’s semi-final with Kickers and America would play Swerve Old Timers (Cincinnati). The roles were reversed this year and Kickers prevailed against BMOC while Swerve Old Timers managed the win against America. In the finals, Kickers were able to outscore Swerve Old Timers in a highly contested match 7-6 crowning them champions of the Over 30 Division.
The Women’s Open Division consisted of 5 teams. These included 3 local teams as well as two Siren’s teams out of Cincinnati. After playing 4 group play games, both Siren’s teams advanced to the finals where Siren’s #1 prevailed over Siren’s #2.
The High School Boys Division of the Tournament featured four teams from the Louisville (KY) and Southern Indiana area. After group play, Spurgeon’s Beard and the Ball Hoggs met in an epic final. The game went back and forth with some phenomenal goalkeeper play from both teams. The winner wasn’t decided until 4 minutes into sudden death overtime when Spurgeon’s Beard prevailed to become the high school boy’s champion.
On behalf of Mockingbird Valley Sports Complex (MVSC) and Baptist Medical Group, we thank all fans, participants and teams who competed in the 2017 MVSC Annual Adult + High School Winter Indoor Tournament, presented by Baptist Medical Group! We hope that all spectators and players alike enjoyed the level of competition and enjoyed playing in Louisville’s premier indoor sports facility: Mockingbird Valley Sports Complex! We look forward to hopefully having all teams (and more) join us again for our 2018 event!
